Hell descried in the bible as:

  1. Darkness

“A land of deepest night, of utter darkness and disorder,”

Matthew 8:12 NIV But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  Mat 8:12  Maar die kinders van die koninkryk sal uitgedryf word in die buitenste duisternis. Daar sal geween wees en gekners van die tande.

2. Gnashing of Teeth

Matthew 13:41-43 NIV   The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42  They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43  Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.

3. Fire

  • Blazing furnace - Matthew 13:42 NIV They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth

Rev 14:10b  and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb

  • Place of consciousness

Luk 16:23  and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.  Luk 16:24  So he called out, 'Father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!' Luk 16:25  But Abraham said, 'Remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain.  Luk 16:26  Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.'

5.  Wheeping

Luk 13:28There will be weeping and cries of sorrow when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are shut outside.

6.  Where the worms never die

Mar 9:47  And if your eye makes you lose your faith, take it out! It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to keep both eyes and be thrown into hell. Mar 9:48  There 'the worms that eat them never die, and the fire that burns them is never put out.'

  • Absolute Torment

  • Hearing – Weeping Teeth gnashing

  • Touch – fire and pain

  • Taste – unquenchable thirst

  • Sight – total darkness

  • Smell – rotting bodies (worm never dies)

And being in torment  - Luk 16:23  and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.

8.  Separation from God

“The wages of sin is death , but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23, NIV).

“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear” Isaiah 59:2, NIV.

THE WONDERS OF HELL

  1. The Wonder of its Existence

Luk 16:22  The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried, Luk 16:23  and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.

  • The Wonder of its Eternity

The Rich Man was in a deep pit and could not go to the other side

Luk 16:26  Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.'

Matthew 25:46, Jesus said, "These shall go away into everlasting punishment but the righteous into eternal life."

  • The Wonder of its Horror

The Rich man was in great pain

Luk 16:23  and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side. Luk 16:24  So he called out, 'Father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!'

  • The Wonder of the Prayers there

The Rich man called out to Abraham

’“I call your attention to the fact that hell is always prayerful. The rich man in hell was a prayerful man, not praying to the true and living God, but calling upon Abraham.”’

Luk 16:24  So he called out, 'Father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!'

  • The Wonder that so many will go there

Mat 7: 13 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.…

Matthew 7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.

  • The Wonder of making disciples for the Kingdom of God

Luk 16:27  The rich man said, 'Then I beg you, father Abraham, send Lazarus to my father's house, Luk 16:28  where I have five brothers. Let him go and warn them so that they, at least, will not come to this place of pain.' Luk 16:29  Abraham said, 'Your brothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them; your brothers should listen to what they say.' Luk 16:30  The rich man answered, 'That is not enough, father Abraham! But if someone were to rise from death and go to them, then they would turn from their sins.' Luk 16:31  But Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone were to rise from death.' "

  • The Wonder that it is so easy to go there

Not even men from the death will convince them to repent

Luk 16:31  But Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone were to rise from death.' "

Matthew 7:13  Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it"

How can you escape hell?

Repent

Act 2:38  Peter said to them, "Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit.

Be baptized

Mar 16:16  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.
