DAY 3 — Authority Destroys the Works of Darkness
1 John 3:8 (NIV) “The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”
Focus Thought: Jesus did not come merely to help people cope with darkness. He came to destroy its works.
Throughout the Gospels, wherever Jesus went, darkness was confronted by the Kingdom of God. The sick were healed. Those in bondage were liberated. The condemned received forgiveness. The rejected were restored. The hopeless discovered hope. Demons were driven out. Lives were transformed. Jesus brought the reality of Heaven into places where darkness had established influence. This helps us understand spiritual authority correctly. Authority is not about making us feel powerful. It is about enabling us to participate in the mission of Jesus.
The purpose of authority is the freedom Jesus gives His followers so they can represent His Kingdom through truth, prayer, love, obedience, compassion, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Hosting God's Presence means that wherever we go, we should carry something of Christ's atmosphere. When you enter a home filled with tension, you can carry peace.
When you meet someone overwhelmed by discouragement, you can carry hope. When lies dominate someone's thinking, you can lovingly speak truth. When fear has gained influence, you can pray and point people toward Christ. When temptation attacks, you can stand upon God's Word.
This is what it means to bring light into darkness. We should, however, remember that people themselves are not our enemy. Spiritual authority must never become an excuse for harshness, suspicion, or treating difficult people as though they were the darkness we oppose.
Jesus loved people while confronting what held them captive. Our authority must therefore always carry His character. Truth without love becomes harsh. Authority without humility becomes dangerous. Power without compassion misrepresents Jesus. Hosting His Presence keeps all three together: Truth. Power. Love.
Another important truth is that darkness is not defeated by our emotional intensity. We do not overcome evil because we shout loudly enough. Our confidence rests in Christ. His finished work. His name. His Word. His Spirit. This means we can pray boldly without becoming fearful or dramatic. We can stand confidently because Jesus is Lord. Sometimes the strongest expression of spiritual authority is simply refusing to cooperate with darkness.
Refusing bitterness. Refusing unforgiveness. Refusing fear. Refusing deception. Refusing temptation. Refusing discouragement. Every time you choose obedience, darkness loses ground. Every time you forgive, darkness loses ground. Every time you speak truth, darkness loses ground. Every time you worship during difficulty, darkness loses ground. Every time you choose love instead of hatred, darkness loses ground. Authority is not only something exercised during extraordinary spiritual moments.
It is demonstrated through everyday obedience. Your home can become a place where God's Presence is welcomed. Your workplace can experience something different because you carry Christ's peace. Your family can encounter hope because you refuse to surrender to fear. Your conversations can bring life because you choose words that agree with Heaven. You are not called to be impressed by darkness. You are called to remain impressed by Jesus. Do not spend your life studying how powerful darkness appears.
Spend your life discovering how glorious Christ is. The more deeply you know Him, the less intimidated you become by what opposes Him. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. And today He continues advancing His Kingdom through surrendered believers who carry His Presence into a broken world.
So walk humbly. Pray boldly. Love deeply. Speak truth. Stand firmly. And wherever darkness has gained influence, allow the light of Christ within you to shine.
Colossians 1:13 (NIV) “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”
Our confidence begins with what God has already accomplished. We belong to Christ's Kingdom. We therefore confront darkness not from fear but from the security of belonging to Jesus.

Knowing truth is not enough; we must surrender to it, live it, and allow the Presence of Christ to shape how we respond to darkness.
Action: Prayerfully walk through your home or quietly pray over your workplace and family. Do not pray from fear. Thank Jesus for His lordship. Ask Him to fill these places with His peace, truth, wisdom, protection, love, and Presence. Where you know of specific struggles, bring them before God by name.
Reflection: Where did you become more aware today that the Presence of Christ within you is greater than the darkness around you?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You came to destroy the works of darkness. Thank You for rescuing me and bringing me into Your Kingdom. Today I surrender my home, family, work, relationships, and circumstances to Your lordship. Where there is fear, release Your peace. Where there is confusion, bring truth. Where there is division, bring reconciliation. Where there is temptation, strengthen obedience.
Where there is discouragement, restore hope. Holy Spirit, fill every part of my life with the Presence of Jesus. Teach me to exercise spiritual authority without pride, fear, or presumption. May I always represent Christ with humility, truth, compassion, and love.
Let my life become a place where darkness loses ground because Jesus is increasingly revealed. In His mighty name, Amen.
