Day 3 — Authority Destroys the Works of Darkness

1 John 3:8 (NIV) “ The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

Focus Thought: One of the most powerful truths in the New Testament is that Jesus did not come merely to teach people how to live better lives. He came to accomplish something far greater. The apostle John tells us plainly: “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”

This verse gives us a clear picture of Christ’s mission. Wherever Jesus went, He confronted darkness with light, lies with truth, sickness with healing, bondage with freedom, despair with hope, and death with life. The Kingdom of God advanced wherever the King was present.

As believers who host the Presence of God, we are called to continue Christ’s mission, not as the Saviour of the world, for only Jesus could accomplish redemption through His death and resurrection, but as His ambassadors, carrying His Presence into a broken world.

This is why spiritual authority matters. Authority is not about making ourselves appear powerful. It is about representing the victory that Jesus has already won. The cross was not merely a demonstration of God’s love. It was also the decisive victory over Satan, sin, and death.

When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He announced that the work necessary for our salvation and the defeat of the enemy had been completed. Colossians tells us that Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Therefore, believers do not fight for victory. We fight from victory. That distinction changes everything. Hosting the Presence of God means learning to live from the finished work of Christ rather than constantly striving to earn what He has already accomplished.

Many Christians live as though the enemy possesses equal authority with God.  Scripture never teaches this. Satan is a defeated enemy. He still seeks to deceive, accuse, tempt, and intimidate, but he no longer possesses ultimate authority.

Jesus alone is Lord. Every believer who belongs to Christ has been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God’s beloved Son.

This means our identity has changed. Our citizenship has changed. Our authority has changed. We no longer live as prisoners. We live as sons and daughters of the King. However, spiritual authority must always be exercised with wisdom and humility.

Our battle is not against people. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6 that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood.” People are never the enemy. The enemy seeks to deceive people.

Jesus always loved people while confronting the spiritual darkness that held them captive.

The same must be true of us. Hosting God’s Presence fills us with compassion, not arrogance. We never use authority to control people. We use authority to serve people. To pray for them. To encourage them. To proclaim truth. To bring peace. To minister healing. To declare the freedom found in Jesus Christ.

This is exactly how Jesus ministered. Every miracle pointed people toward the Father’s love. Every deliverance restored dignity. Every healing revealed God’s compassion. Authority always served love. One of the enemy’s greatest strategies is intimidation. He wants believers to remain silent.

He whispers, “You are not qualified.” “Nothing will change.” “Your prayers do not matter.” “Someone else can do it.” These lies have silenced countless believers.

Yet Jesus has already spoken the truth. He has commissioned His Church. He has given us His Spirit. He has entrusted us with His Gospel. He has promised His Presence. We do not need to fear darkness because darkness cannot overcome light. Even the smallest light changes a dark room.

The Presence of Christ within one surrendered believer is more powerful than the darkness surrounding them. Hosting God’s Presence means becoming increasingly aware that wherever you go, Jesus desires to bring His Kingdom through you. When you pray over your family, you are inviting God’s peace into your home. When you pray at your workplace, you are inviting His wisdom into your environment. When you intercede for your community, you are partnering with Heaven for transformation.  When you speak encouragement, you are pushing back discouragement. When you forgive, you overcome hatred.

When you proclaim God’s Word, truth overcomes deception. This is spiritual authority in everyday life. It is not reserved for extraordinary moments. It is expressed through ordinary believers who faithfully walk with Jesus every day.

One of the greatest ways we destroy the works of darkness is by simply reflecting Christ’s character. Every act of love weakens hatred. Every act of forgiveness weakens bitterness. Every act of generosity weakens selfishness. Every act of truth weakens deception. Every act of obedience weakens rebellion. Every act of worship weakens fear.

As we host His Presence, His Kingdom quietly advances wherever we go. Never underestimate the authority carried by a believer who consistently walks with Jesus.

Your prayers matter. Your obedience matters. Your worship matters. Your faithfulness matters. The Holy Spirit delights to work through surrendered people who remain humble, obedient, and available. Today, remember that you are not called to fear darkness.

You are called to carry light. You are not called to retreat. You are called to advance God’s Kingdom with love, truth, humility, and courage. The Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. And now, through His Spirit, He continues His work through His Church. May your life become a visible expression of His victory.

May every place you enter become brighter because Christ lives within you. And may people encounter freedom—not because of who you are—but because of who Jesus is.

John 8:36 (NIV) “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Jesus came to bring true freedom. As His followers, we do not create freedom—we point people to the One who has already secured it. Every prayer, every act of love, and every proclamation of God’s truth becomes an opportunity for others to experience the freedom found in Christ.

Action for Today:  Prayerfully walk through your home, workplace, or another place where you spend significant time. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill every room with His Presence. Pray Scripture over your family, workplace, church, and community. Where you sense fear, declare God’s peace. Where you sense discouragement, declare God’s hope. Where there is conflict, pray for reconciliation. Where there is confusion, pray for God’s wisdom. As you pray, remember that your confidence is not in your words but in Christ’s authority and His abiding Presence.

Reflection Question: As you prayed over your home, workplace, or family today, where did you sense God’s Presence bringing peace, hope, or spiritual change? How did praying with Christ’s authority strengthen your own faith?

Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Your Son to destroy the works of the devil and to establish Your Kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy. Thank You that through Jesus Christ I no longer belong to the kingdom of darkness but to the Kingdom of Your beloved Son. Lord Jesus, thank You for Your complete victory on the cross. Because You conquered sin, death, and every power of darkness, I can walk with confidence and peace. Help me never to be intimidated by the enemy’s lies. Teach me to stand firmly upon Your finished work. Holy Spirit, fill me afresh today. Let Your Presence overflow into every place I enter. May my home become a place of peace. May my workplace reflect Your wisdom. May my family experience Your love. May my church be strengthened through Your Spirit. Use my prayers to release hope. Use my words to encourage the discouraged. Use my life to point people to Jesus. Protect me from pride whenever You work through me. Remind me that all authority belongs to Christ alone. Keep my heart humble, compassionate, and completely dependent upon You. Lord, wherever darkness exists, let me carry Your light. Where there is fear, let me carry faith. Where there is despair, let me carry hope. Where there is bondage, let me point people to the freedom found only in Jesus. May my greatest desire always be to glorify You and to make Your Name known. Thank You that Your Presence goes before me, surrounds me, and lives within me. I choose today to walk confidently in Your authority while remaining completely surrendered to Your Lordship.
