DAY 2 — Obedience Brings Joy

Psalm 119:14–16 (NIV) “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”

Focus Thought: We sometimes imagine obedience as something heavy, restrictive, or joyless. Yet the writer of Psalm 119 speaks about God's commands very differently: “I rejoice… I delight.” For him, obedience was not merely duty. It was treasure.

Why? Because he understood that God's instructions come from God's heart. The One who created us knows how life works best. His boundaries are not designed to remove life from us but to protect and lead us into the life He intended.

Glad obedience therefore requires a renewed understanding of God's character. If we secretly believe God is trying to withhold good things from us, obedience will always feel restrictive. But when we believe that He is good, wise, loving, and trustworthy, His commands become something we can receive with confidence. There will still be moments when obedience costs us something.

Forgiveness can be costly. Generosity can cost us financially. Integrity may cost us an opportunity. Speaking truth may cost popularity. Following God's direction may require giving up something comfortable.

Joyful obedience does not mean the sacrifice never hurts. It means a deeper joy lies beneath the cost: the joy of pleasing God.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this. His obedience led Him through suffering, yet He remained committed to His Father's will.

Hosting His Presence teaches us that the greatest reward of obedience is not merely what God gives us afterwards. The greatest reward is walking closely with Him. So when obedience becomes costly, do not focus only on what you are surrendering. Remember Who you are following. God's will may stretch you, but His heart toward you remains good. Glad obedience says, “Lord, even when it costs me, I delight in belonging to You.”

Action for Today: Choose joy in an area where obedience currently feels costly.

Reflective Question: Where did you discover joy on the other side of obedience?

Prayer: Father, teach me to delight in Your ways. Give me joy even when obedience requires sacrifice. Amen.

Journal Prompt: Where can I choose joyful obedience?
