DAY 1 — Obedience Flows from Love

John 14:23–24 (NIV) “Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.’”

Focus Thought: Jesus connects obedience directly with love: “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.” This changes the way we understand obedience. Christianity is not primarily about keeping a list of rules to earn God's acceptance. We obey because we already belong to Him. Obedience becomes our loving response to the One who first loved us.

A significant difference exists between obedience motivated by fear and obedience motivated by love. Fear asks, “What will happen if I don't obey?” Love asks, “Lord, what would please You?” When our relationship with Jesus grows deeper, obedience becomes increasingly relational.

Think about the people you deeply love. When you know something matters to them, you want to respond, not merely because you have to, but because the relationship matters. Even more, intimacy with Jesus changes our response to His Word. Hosting His Presence therefore produces a heart that becomes increasingly sensitive to Him. The closer you walk with Jesus, the more important His desires become to you. You begin noticing His gentle prompts: forgive that person, encourage someone, give generously, stop that behaviour, speak the truth, make that call, spend time with Me.

The challenge is responding when He speaks. Delayed obedience often becomes negotiated obedience. We begin explaining, postponing, rationalising, or looking for alternatives. Glad obedience says simply: “Yes, Lord.”

Today, do not ask only, “What am I supposed to do?” Ask: “Jesus, because I love You, how can I respond to You today?”

Obedience is not merely proof of discipline. Obedience is love becoming visible.

Action for Today: Respond immediately to one clear prompting from the Lord.

Reflective Question: What act of obedience flowed from your love for Jesus today?

Prayer: Jesus, I love You. Give me a willing heart that responds quickly and joyfully when You speak. Amen.

Journal Prompt: Where is Jesus asking for my “yes”?
